CLERMONT, Fla—Wesleyan’s Abby Orso fired the latest no-hitter by a Connecticut-based college pitcher on Friday, blanking Saint Joseph’s of Maine by an 11-0 score at the Hancock Park Field.
Orso, a graduate student at Wesleyan, struck out 10 and walked three over her five innings of work in a game called after five because of the NCAA mercy rule.
She is the first Wesleyan pitcher to fire a no-hitter since Karla Hargrave threw up all zeroes against Hamilton back in 2006.
Orso aided her own cause by going 1-for-2 in the game with a triple and a walk. She scored two runs.
Wesleyan’s 11 runs in the game were its biggest output of the season as the Cardinal improved to 6-0 on the season.
Other no-hitters being thrown by Connecticut-based college pitchers include: Southern Connecticut’s Ashey Lewis, who opened the season with back-to-back no-hitters (9-0 over Bloomfield on March 4 and 13-0 over Post on March 6); and Bridgeport’s Kaite Burawski (8-0 over Walsh on March 2).
UConn’s Hope Jenkins fired a one-hitter vs. Bowling Green on March 1.
