Three lop-sided games, one tight contest and one “upset” seed-wise came out of Saturday’s Naugatuck Valley League quarterfinals.
Top-seeded Woodland Regional won 13-1 over No. 8 Naugatuck; No. 2 St. Paul’s rolled to a 10-0 win over Watertown; third-seeded Seymour edged No. 6 Holy Cross by a 7-6 score; and fifth-seeded Wolcott “upset” fourth-seeded Oxford by a 15-2 score. (Oxford had beaten Wolcott by a 12-4 back in April).
On Wednesday at Wolcott High School, Seymour will play St. Paul’s at 5 p.m., and Woodland Regional will face the host Eagles at 7 p.m.
Here’s a look at the NVL Quarterfinals:
WOODLAND REGIONAL 13, NAUGATUCK 1
Ella VanAlystne fired a complete-game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and a walk as top-seeded Woodland Regional won its quarterfinal contest over Naugatuck.
The Hawks pounded out 13 hits in the game with four players posting multi-hit games.
No. 9 hitter Angelina Tottenham was 3-for-3 with two runs scored an RBI; Kate Lisowski was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored; Ayla DeCrescenzo was 2-for-3 withi two RBIs and a run scored; and Caitlyn Braun was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
Julia Rowley also had three RBIs and scored twice while notching a hit. Rowley, Tottenham and Paige Chiaramonte all had doubles, too.
For Naugatuck, Katherine Umland had the team’s lone hit.
ST. PAUL’S 10, WATERTOWN 0
Lauren Kozlak pitched a complete game shutout while scattering eight hits , no walks and striking out seven as St. Paul’s advanced to the semifinals.
One of Kozlak’s strikeouts was the 400th of her career, as well.
At the plate, Kozlak also blasted a line-drive double and towering home run as she went 2 for 4. Bella McCulloch added to the 15-hit attack , launching a long home run followed by a line drive double in the gap in her next at bat. That hit was the 100th hit of Bella’s career as a Falcon.
Additionally, Laila McCulloch went 4-for-4, smashing a double and three singles. Lily McCulloch and Stella Boucino also notched two hits apiece.
Defensively, Lauren Kozlak was aided by her sister Julia who, in the fifth inning threw out a Watertown runner from left field attempting to stretch a single in to a double.
For Watertown, Alexa Conner and Mariah Matos both had a pair of singles.
SEYMOUR 7, HOLY CROSS 6
In the tightest game of the first round, the host Wildcats put up a four spot in the fifth to take the lead and held on to earn the win.
Daphne Shea drove in three runs with two doubles while Mia Cunningham had three hits, with a double, and scored two runs while driving in one.
Payton McDaniel was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, as well.
Skylar Barton got the win in relief, giving up just one earned run in four innings of work. She struck out three and walked three.
For Holy Cross, Haley DiBona (3 runs, 2 doubles), Gabriella Rosado (2 RBIs), and Amelia Mowad all had two hits apiece.
Kendall Raudenbush also had two runs scored.
WOLCOTT 16, OXFORD 2
The fifth-seeded Eagles scored in every inning except for the second while coasting to the win over Oxford.
Avery Malenfant went the distance to get the win, striking out 7 and walking three while giving up just two runs, one earned.
Offensively, Wolcott had 17 hits in the game. Lilly Spina had three those hits, including a double; Jaelyn Belval (3 runs) had two singles; Lauryn Sinclair (triple) had two hits, three runs and three RBIs; Ava Shea drove in five runs with two hits and scored twice; Lia Ladd plated three with two hits; Olivia D’Alessio had two singles and two RBIs; and Ashley Iacoviello had two hits and scored twice.
For Oxford, Isabella Costantini had three hits while Sienna Lucas had two hits.
