WOLCOTT—Another strong pitching performance from Woodland Regional’s Ella VanAlstyne got her team into the Naugatuck Valley League’s championship game on Wednesday.
Woodland’s 10-0 win over Wolcott sent the Hawks to the finale, where they will face St. Paul Catholic, a 6-1 win over Seymour in the other semifinal.
The Hawks and the Falcons will look to fly to the title on Friday.
WOODLAND REGIONAL 10, WOLCOTT 0
Ella Van Alstyne fired a complete-game one-hitter as Woodland Regional advanced to the Naugatuck Valley League championship game.
VanAlstyne struck out 17 and walked just one and did hit four batters, but the Hawks had plenty of offense to advance to the final.
In fact, Woodland pounded out 12 hits over six innings to pile up the runs.
In addition to her pitching prowess in the circle, VanAlstyne also went 3-for-4 from the lead-off hitters slot and scored two runs.
P Chiaramonte added two hits, including a triple, which drove in three runs for the Hawks.
Braun also had two RBIs and one single.
ST. PAUL CATHOLIC 6, SEYMOUR 1
Second-seeded St. Paul jumped out to a four-run lead after the first inning and never looked back to earn a berth in the NVL final.
After St. Paul’s pitcher Lauren Kozlak retired Seymour with a 1-2-3 top of the first, Julia Kozlak began things offensively in the home half of the inning with a one-out single.
Isabella McCullough followed with another base knock, giving the Falcons two runners on in the early going.
With two outs, St. Paul did some big-time damage.
Laila McCullough delivered a two-run single to put St. Paul on top before her sister Liliana McCullough doubled to make it a 3-0 tally.
Stella Boucino followed with another single, plating the Falcons fourth run of the inning.
Kozlak scattered six hits over seven innings in earning the win. She struck out three and didn’t walk a single batter.
Isabella McCullough went 3-for-3 with two runs scored an RBI to pace the St. Paul offense. Julia Kozlak added two hits, including a triple, and two runs while Laila McCullough and Boucino both had two hits, as well. Laila McCullough drove in a trio of runs.
For Seymour, Mia Cunningham had a pair of hits, including a double while Julianna Raucci, Ava Chernak, Taylor Guarino and Payton McDaniel (1 run) all had one hit each. McDaniel and Raucci both had doubles.
Cassidy Marcinczyk pitched 3.2 innings of one-run relief for Seymour.
