The last two SWC teams playing in the last league quarterfinal beat the rain, then it was fifth-seeded Newtown that preceded to beat Notre Dame Prep to advance to next week’s semifinals.

Newtown will face top-seeded New Milford in the next round at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.

Newtown 5, Notre Dame Prep 1

The fifth-seeded Nighthawks scored one run in five different innings to piece together a 5-1 upset victory over No. 4 Notre Dame Prep in Fairfield.

The Lancers had beaten Newtown, 3-2 in 8 innings, back on May 7.

This time around, Newtown scored first and never looked back.

Starting pitcher Addy Cordova, also Newtown’s lead-off hitter, was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Elena Burdon was 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Cordova and Gabby Ansman (1 RBI) both doubled, as well.

Lila Accousti had two RBIs in the game along with a single.

In the circle, Cordova also excelled. In seven innings of work, she gave up five hits and one run while striking out seven and walking a batter.

For Notre Dame Prep, five different Lancers had hits, but Cianna Andrews and Molly Garfield had a double and a triple, respectively. Leilani Navarro took the loss, giving up four earned runs with three walks and 13 strikeouts.
