NEW LONDON—The Eastern Connecticut Conference champions were decided on Thursday and it was Norwich Free Academy winning the Division 1 championship while Bacon Academy took home the Division 2 crown.
Top-seeded Norwich Free Academy defeated No. 6 Waterford, 13-6, to win the big school title while No. 2 Bacon Academy bested top-seeded Montville by a 3-2 score for the small school title.
Here’s a look at both games:
DIVISION 1
NFA 13, WATERFORD 7
The Norwich Free Academy Wildcats won the ECC Division 1 championship on Thursday because they had an answer for Waterford every time.
When Waterford took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, NFA scored four times in the bottom of the inning. When the Lancers added three more runs in the fourth, the Wildcats put up a 5-spot to take a 9-6 lead.
Amelia Driscoll had a double, home run, five RBIs and two walks to lead the Wildcats charge. Dakota Bourdon added a 3-for-4 effort with a double, two runs and three RBIs. Aubrey Martin (3 runs, 1 RBI) and Olivia Bourdon (1 RBI) both had two hits, as well.
Dakota Bourdon was the winning pitcher, giving up just two earned runs. She struck out 11.
For Waterford, Bella Rush had two of the Lancers’ three hits, including a solo home run.
DIVISION 2
BACON ACADEMY 3, MONTVILLE 2
Gabrielle Russo opened the top of the eighth inning by reaching on an error, later scoring on Briana Hawes RBI ground out as the Bobcats eked out a tight win over Montville for the ECC Division 2 title.
Riley Stolzman and Hawes both had two hits for Bacon Academy while Talia Ramos had a double. Lily Pulse also had an RBI.
Stolzman got the win in the circle, going the full eighth innings and giving up just one earned run. She struck out 11 and walked five.
For Montville, Jainna Lesniewski had two hits and a run scored while Alanna Noonan doubled and Harper Hedrick tripled. Abby Daniewicz went eight innings, as well, striking out six and walking three. Only of BA’s runs were earned.
