ELLINGTON—The Ellington Knights won what is perhaps the toughest league tournament to win in Connecticut, sweeping a doubleheader of games to claim the North Central Connecticut Conference championship on Thursday.
The Knights won their semifinal game by a 12-5 score over Windsor Locks before taking the title with a 2-1 win over Granby Memorial in the night cap.
Ellington pitcher Tyla Gamborcorta won both games, throwing a combined 219 pitches over the course of two games. She struck out 7 and walked two in the title tilt after fanning 17 with just one walk in the semifinal.
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
ELLINGTON 2, GRANBY MEMORIAL 1
Ellington scored one run in the third and one in the fourth, giving Gambacorta all the runs she would need in the game.
Emmalyn Thorpe had two singles for the Knights and she scored the run in the fourth inning on an error. Gambacorta scored Ellington’s run in the third inning after singling and later stealing home.
For Granby, Brynne Simard had two hits while Sophia Vitelli had the other.
SEMIFINALS
ELLINGTON 12, WINDSOR LOCKS 5
The Knights pounded out 17 hits in the game, allowing them to overcome four errors and advance.
Gambacorta aided her own cause with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBIs. Madison Havener (3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBIs) also had a home run. Alyssa Corsino (3-for-4, 1 run, 2 RBIs) doubled as did Brooke Scully (1-for-3, 1 run) and Taylor Havener (2-for-3, 2 runs scored). Kasish Koul also plated three, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
For Windsor Locks, Shayla Gamache had a double and a single.
GRANBY MEMORIAL 4, COVENTRY 1
Four different Bears drove in runs and winning pitcher Amanda Bristol scattered six hits while giving up a single unearned run as Granby Memorial stunned Coventry in their semifinal.
Bristol was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI; Brynne Simard was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a runs cored; and Rachel Ehrenwerth was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Jaden Clark doubled and drove in a run, as well.
For Coventry, six different Patriots had hits, all singles, including Lilah Talaga, Meghan Doherty, Lily Harkins, Mattingly Rivers, Andersin and Aliza Sobol.
