STRATFORD—Brookfield pitcher Sydney Miller fired a complete-game four-hitter, shutting out Newtown 3-0 to deliver the Bobcats their first SouthWest Conference championship since 2011.
Miller struck out 12 and walked four, but didn’t give up a single run. She threw 134 pitches, 84 of which were for strikes.
The Bobcats scored a single run in the first and put the game away with two more runs in the sixth to clinch the championship over Newtown, which had upset top-seeded New Milford to reach the finale.
In the first inning, with the bases loaded, Mary Aurrichio grounded out into a fielder’s choice, which allowed Olivia Sinapi to score for a 1-0 Bobcats lead.
In the sixth, Addasyn Coutts hit a sacrifice fly to score one run before Haylie Miller singled to right to score Brookfield’s run.
Six different Brookfield players at hits with Mary Aurrichio and Sydney Miller both recording doubles. Samantha Aurrichio, Emma Ferguson and Coutts also had singles.
For Newtown, Addy Cordova had two hits while Elena Burdo and Gillian Boughran both singled. Cordova was the pitcher for the Nighthawks. She gave up three hits, walking four and strking out three.
