BROOKFIELD — By the time Olivia Sinapi stepped into the batter’s box in the bottom of the 15th inning Monday night, the game had long since crossed the border from softball game to softball legend.

The Brookfield sophomore shortstop had already spent more than three hours battling Jonathan Law in a Class M semifinal that seemed determined never to end. Pitchers kept pitching. Defenses kept making plays. Leads happened and then vanished. Momentum changed uniforms more times than anyone could count.

And all across Connecticut, coaches, players and fans were glued to their phones, refreshing GameChanger as two teams traded punches deep into the night.

Sinapi knew none of that.

She had a much simpler mission.

“Really, I was just thinking as far as I can get a ball to hit so we can score,” Sinapi said. “I was just thinking be aggressive. Most of the game we were pretty aggressive and it helped us out in certain situations. Going up to the plate, I just had to find a good pitch to hit and do what I’ve been doing.”

A few moments later, she did exactly that.

Her game-winning hit finally ended the marathon and sent Brookfield to the state championship game, touching off a celebration that will live in Bobcat softball history for years to come.

Days later, the moment still feels surreal.

“No, I’m still pretty numb from it,” Sinapi admitted. “That was an insane game. I’ve never played in a game like that. To come up with a hit like that in a big spot was just huge.”

She paused before shifting attention away from herself.

“To watch Sydney (Miller) pitch that many innings and still be ready to keep going is insane. Just all the clutch hits from everyone. It’s just insane.”

That answer tells you a lot about Sinapi.

The winning hit may have made her the hero of the night, but nobody around the Brookfield program is surprised by the way she handled the spotlight.

The spotlight has found her before.

A two-year starter at shortstop, Sinapi was thrown directly into one of the toughest jobs in Connecticut high school softball when she earned the starting role as a freshman last season.

Not only did she have to anchor the infield for one of the state’s premier programs, she eventually grew into the role of lead-off hitter as well.

For many freshmen, that responsibility can feel overwhelming.

For Sinapi, it became an opportunity.

“I think it was just the support from my teammates that helped me out a lot,” she said. “Coming in as a freshman was a lot and I knew our team could be really, really good. My coach always believed in me and trusted me. They all helped me become so much better and more confident in myself.”

Brookfield head coach Alyssa Lionetti saw those qualities immediately.

“She’s a phenomenal kid,” Lionetti said. “She’s so athletic that defensively I’ve never seen a kid be so smooth. She’s just such an athlete that it’s easy to put her literally anywhere, but we need her at short.”

The coach’s praise doesn’t stop there.

“She’s one of the best baserunners I’ve ever seen and she’s so fast,” Lionetti said. “She really has every element of the game. She reminds me of Sydney in a quieter form. She’s such a competitor. She wants to win. She talks every single pitch. She’s just in it.”

Those qualities were already evident when Sinapi arrived as a freshman.

In fact, she was one of four freshmen who started in Brookfield’s infield a year ago, a talented sophomore class that has become one of the program’s foundations.

During the comeback-filled semifinal victory over Jonathan Law, that group once again showed why its future appears so bright.

“Lila Conrad was the first one that brought us back,” Lionetti said. “Then Mary Riccio, then Emma Ferguson and then Liv. The whole sophomore class in general, the four of them are just phenomenal.”

Still, it was fitting that Sinapi ultimately delivered the final blow.

“That’s the kind of kid she is,” Lionetti said. “Just clutch. Knows the game, knows the situation and just wants to win.”

The game-winning hit may have been the biggest moment of her career so far, but softball has been part of Sinapi’s life for as long as she can remember.

She’s been playing since she was four years old.

“My dad has been a huge impact on me,” she said. “We’ve always played together.”

She started in Brookfield’s youth program before continuing her development through travel softball. Today she plays for Rhode Island Thunder Connecticut, one of the region’s premier travel organizations.

But while her talent helped open doors, her love for the sport is what keeps her coming back.

“I’ve always loved softball,” she said. “Playing it, I’m just always happy. It just makes me smile. It makes me feel good about myself. It’s just amazing. It’s an amazing sport.”

Now, somehow, the sophomore who still sounds surprised she’s already finished her second varsity season finds herself at the center of one of the state’s biggest softball stories.

The scary part for opponents?

She’s only halfway through her high school career.

As Brookfield prepared to face rival New Milford in the state championship game, Sinapi wasn’t focused on the attention generated by her game-winning hit. She wasn’t thinking about headlines or social media or the thousands of people who followed every pitch of the semifinal.

She was thinking about the same thing she always thinks about.

The team.

“I think we can win if we just play our game,” she said.

Simple words.

Then again, simplicity worked pretty well the last time she stepped into the batter’s box.

All she needed was one good swing.

Fifteen innings later, Brookfield was heading to the state championship game.
