WORCESTER, Mass.—The Shoreline Wildcats are one victory away from playing for a Senior League East Region championship.
The Lyme-Old Lyme based Connecticut champions punched their ticket to Tuesday morning’s semifinal with a convincing 6-0 victory over New York in Monday night’s quarterfinal, setting up a rematch with tournament host Worcester, Mass., a team the Wildcats defeated 11-2 in the tournament opener.
Sawyer Barreto tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out eight while allowing just one walk over seven dominant innings as the Lyme/Old Lyme-based Shoreline squad improved to 4-0 in the tournament.
The Wildcats wasted little time grabbing the lead.
Avery Goiangos singled to open the bottom of the first, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on Isabella Franklin’s sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
Shoreline doubled its advantage in the third after Brooke Ouellette was hit by a pitch and Goiangos laid down a bunt single. Another New York error moved both runners into scoring position before Victoria Glaras lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Ouellette for a 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats added another run in the fourth when Nana Cruz was hit by a pitch and Barreto helped her own cause with an RBI double to center.
Shoreline then broke the game open with a three-run fifth.
Goiangos lined a solo home run to left field to make it 4-0. Later in the inning, Glaras came home on an infield error before Cruz drilled an RBI double to left, extending the lead to 6-0.
That was more than enough support for Barreto.
New York put runners aboard in five different innings, but Barreto never allowed the opposition to mount a serious threat, finishing off the complete-game shutout with her eighth strikeout.
Goiangos led the Wildcats offensively, going 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Barreto added a double and an RBI, while Cruz doubled, drove in a run and scored.
Bea Aldana and Josie Arndt also collected hits for Shoreline.
The Wildcats will face host Worcester, Mass., in Tuesday morning’s semifinal. Shoreline opened the tournament with an 11-2 victory over Worcester and now sits two wins away from advancing to the Senior League Softball World Series.
