The Brookfield High softball team knows every time the Bobcats take the field, they’re going to have a chance to win.
After all, sophomore Sydney Miller is in the circle.
The right-handed Miller has helped lead Brookfield to an 8-3 record coming out of the weekend and the Bobcats have a huge SWC league game against Newtown on Monday.
Miller, who grew up as a Brookfield Burn travel player and now competes for the Empire State Huskies, took the time for an “Extra Innings” chat with the Connecticut Softball Blog on Saturday.
FIRST INNING: How did you become a softball player?
SYDNEY MILLER: When I was little, I really liked sports and my dad suggested that I try it and I loved it and I’ve played it ever since.
SECOND INNING: What took you out to the circle? What got you out there as a pitcher?
SM: I loved the game and I liked getting the ball, so I tried pitching lessons and it was a lot of fun.
THIRD INNING: Without giving away any trade secrets, what’s that one pitch you love to throw? When Coach calls it, you’re like, “Oh yeah!“
SM: Curve. It is my best pitch.
FOURTH INNING: Do you have any superstitions either on the field or when you first go out there?
SM: Not really, no. I mean, I have my routines, but not really any superstitions.
FIFTH INNING: Do you use music to hype yourself up before the game? What’s your go-to hype song?
SM: I like ‘Hope’ by NF. It’s my favorite.
SIXTH INNING: What has been your best softball moment so far?
SM: That’s tough. There’s a lot of good moments. The other day we had a good Ridgefield game. We had a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh.
SEVENTH INNING: How do you feel about the Brookfield season so far and what are your hopes and goals for lies ahead?
SM: I think we’re doing great. We’ve had a really good season. We’ve only lost to really good teams. I think we’re coming out strong and we’re doing really well. I’m really excited.
EIGHTH INNING: What scares you?
SM: I don’t like failing. That scares me.
NINTH INNING: What is something nobody else knows about you?
SM: Ooh, I don’t know. I love to sing, but I suck at it. But everybody knows I suck at it. (Laughs).
TENTH INNING: What was the last book you read that wasn’t a school assignment and give us a quick review?
SM: “A Court of Thorns and Roses” by Sarah J. Maas. It was awesome. I loved it. I like her other series, too.
ELEVENTH INNING: If you could get home tonight and have anything you want as a home-cooked meal, what would you pick?
SM: Literally anything my dad makes. He’s like the best cook ever.
TWELFTH INNING: What one word best describes you?
SM: Ambitious.
