NEW HAVEN—Welcome home, Katie Donahey.
Well, if home was 2,495 miles away from “home”, that is.
Donahey, Yale University’s senior center fielder from Phoenix, led the Bulldogs to their fourth win of the Bulldog Invitational, slamming another big, late-game home run to lead her team to a 5-2 win over Sacred Heart University on Sunday afternoon.
On Saturday, Donahey delivered a walk-off grand slam in a 7-3 win over Central Connecticut. Today, against another in-state opponent—this time SHU—Donahey went deep for a three-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning.
That was the difference in the game as Grace Westmoreland came on the seventh inning for a 1-2-3 outing that gave the freshman her first career collegiate save and the Bulldogs their sixth win against nine losses.
Yale went 4-1 in the event, which started Friday. Sacred Heart finished the Invitational 3-2 and dropped to 6-9 overall.
The Bulldogs struck first in the game when Westmoreland lofted a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
A pitchers’ duel between Yale’s Emma Taylor and Hannah Turner and SHU’s Sam Kowalski.
Neither team would score again until the fifth when the Pioneers answered with two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
A two-out, two-run home run by Morgan Teodosio (Seymour High/Ansonia) gave SHU the lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Donahey answered.
Team captain SJ Mull and Ava Kang had back-to-back singles before Donehey went deep to give the Bulldogs the lead for good.
In addition to Donehey going deep twice with two-game winning home runs, it was freshman pitcher Caitlin LaFerney who got her second win of the season. She won her first game on Friday.
Up next, Yale will at Providence on Wednesday and then host Holy Cross on Thursday. Both games are doubleheaders.
Sacred Heart will host Brown for a doubleheader on Saturday.
