NEW HAVEN—The Sacred Heart University softball completed a weekend sweep of Central Connecticut State University, topping the Blue Devils by a 9-7 score in a back-and-forth game at Yale University’s Bulldog Invitational on Saturday.
Lead-off hitter Savannah Moore was 4-for-5 with a run scored and four RBIs to carry the Pioneers to the win.
It was Moore’s RBI double that scored Kaelyn Freed in the top of the third inning, staking SHU to a 1-0 lead.
Central answered with a four spot in the home half of the innings, however.
After the Pioneers got two quick strikeouts, CCSU’s Joslyn Teel tied the game with a solo home run. KC Machado followed with a walk before Sophia LoPiccolo’s double made it a 2-1 score in favor of the Blue Devils.
Skylar Warn then blasted a two-run home run and Central was up 4-1.
The offensive output woke up the Pioneers, who put up a six spot in the top of the fourth.
Carly Koltko opened the inning for SHU with a double and Cierra Bender walked.
After two outs were recorded on fly outs, Morgan Teodosio (Seymour High/Ansonia) singled to load the bases.
Freed then delivered a two-run single to left before Moore added an RBI base knock to tie the game at 4-4.
Jess Brown, Charlene Davis and Koltko—who had started the inning—added back-to-back-to-back RBI singles, giving the Pioneers a 7-4 lead.
Central got one run back in the fourth when Teal’s sac fly scored Abigail Mitchell, who pinch ran after Ava Cino walked.
Again, Sacred Heart answered with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Elle Leckrone and Morgan Teodosio both doubled before Moore delivered a two-run single to make it a 9-5 game.
The Blue Devils got a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on Grace Lawton’s sacrifice fly and Cino’s single, but it was as close as CCSU would get.
Sacred Heart used three pitchers to get through the game. Cara Sweet started, lasting just 2.2 innings before giving way to, who got the win despite one tough inning where she gave up three runs and four walks. Sam Kowalski came in to shut the door with three innings of shutout softball to get her first save of the season.
The Pioneers, who had bested CCSU by a 10-2 score on Friday, later fell to Maine by a 9-0 tally.
For Central, Warn was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Sophia LoPiccolo added two hits and two runs scored along with an RBI.
Both LoPiccolo and Warn had doubles amongst their hits, as well.
Sacred Heart wraps up the Bulldog Invitational by playing host Yale at 1:30 p.m., on Sunday.
