Top-seeded Waterford and second-seeded Norwich Free Academy now know who they will face in the ECC Division 1 semifinals as third seeded Ledyard and fourth-seeded Fitch took quarterfinal victories on Tuesday.
Ledyard bested Stonington by a 7-2 score and will travel to NFA on Wednesday while Fitch rolled to a 12-0 win over Killington and will face Waterford in the other semifinals.
In the ECC Division 2 Quarterfinals, two quarterfinal upsets threw lower seeded teams into the semifinals.
No. 5 Montville pulled a 7-4 “upset” over No. 4 St. Bernard, and No. 6 Bacon Academy defeated No. 3 Griswold 7-6 to advance.
Bacon Academy will play at Lyman Hall in one semifinal while Montville will play at top-seeded Wheeler in the other.
Here’s a brief look at all of Tuesday’s ECC quarterfinals.
DIVISION 1 QUARTERFINALS
LEDYARD 7, STONINGTON 2
Julie Bonser was 4-for-4 with three RBIs while Alexia Lemmon earned the complete-game win as the Colonols advanced to the ECC semifinals.
Lemmon struck out nine and did not walk a batter. She aided her own cause with a double, as well; one of two hits for her on the day.
Faith Dalton (2 runs scored) and Alana Ninteau (2-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) both had two hits, as well.
For Stonington, Michaela Miner (triple) and Shelby Mayo both had two hits each while Hana Lyon had a double.
FITCH 12, KILLINGLY 0
Hailey Merrill pitched a five-inning shutout to lead fourth-seeded Fitch into the semifinals.
Merrill struck out four and didn’t walk a batter while scattering four hits.
Offensively, the Falcons scored four times in the second and five times in the third to take control of the game.
The top three spots in Fitch’s lineup—Jaedyn Steffens (3-for-3, 3 runs, 4 RBIs), Maerin Lyon (2-for-3, 2 runs, 1 RBI) and Grace Cosmopoulous (2-for-3, 2 runs, 5 RBIs)—combined for seven of their team’s eight hits.
Cosmoupoulos had a second and a home run while Steffens had a triple.
For Killingly, Jayden Durand, Kylie Anderson, Loretta Lannon and Violet Schaefer all had singles.
DIVISION 2 QUARTERFINALS
MONTVILLE 7, ST. BERNARD 4
The Wolves put up three crooked numbers in three different innings to pull out the win over St. Bernard in Uncasville.
Payton Jones was 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the charge. Michalina Anton (2 runs) and Amelia Smarz both had two hits, as well. Jones, Anton and Natalie Lutyen (2 RBIs) had doubles and Jainna Lesniewski had a home run with two RBIs. She also scored twice.
Winning pitcher Abby Daniewicz gave up just one earned run while striking out 14 and walking three.
For St. Bernard, Madison Scribner, Lena Byers and Kiera Davila each had two singles apiece. Aubree Nygaard doubled.
BACON ACADEMY 7, GRISWOLD 2
A four-run fifth inning gave Bacon Academy just enough room to hold on and advance to the semifinals.
Lily Pulse and Reagan Reid both had two hits each for the Bobcats. Reid plated two runs as did Gabby Russo. Reina Hill (3 stolen bases) singled and walked twice, scoring three runs from the lead-off spot, as well.
Winning pitcher Riley Stolzman pitched a complete game, giving up just two earned runs. She struck out four and walked one while scattering eight hits.
For Griswold, Kierra Neilson and Arisnaely Diaz had two hits each. Neilson had a double and drove in three while Diaz plated a pair of runs. Abigail Matheson scored twice, as well.
