Jordan McCue used to wear No. 23 because of Michael Jordan. She’s also honored the former NBA star by having a competitive drive that has helped her chase her softball dreams. As the starting second baseman for the Cheshire Rams, the junior has a chance this weekend to win a CIAC Class LL state championship that eluded the team a year ago. Following Cheshire’s semifinal win over Southington, McCue went “Extra Innings” with the CT Softball Blog.
FIRST INNING: Tell us journey to the softball field. How did you wind up becoming a softball player?
JORDAN McCUE: I started off doing gymnastics, soccer, and basketball, but once I started playing softball I fell in love with the game
SECOND INNING: What does it mean to you to play for Cheshire High School?
JM: Playing against Cheshire teams in my early years, I realized it was a more competitive and professional atmosphere. So, my father moved us to Cheshire the Summer after I graduated middle school for those better opportunities.
THIRD INNING: What do you like best about playing second base?
JM: I like how there is high activity and I am always being involved in almost every play.
FOURTH INNING: How did you wind up wearing uniform number 20?
JM: I was initially number 23, because I liked having the same name as Michael Jordan and wanted to wear his number. But when I got older that number was taken so I’ve been 20 for the past 5 years.
FIFTH INNING: What individual moment are you most proud of from your softball career?
JM: One of my proudest moments was freshman year when we were down by four and I hit a grand slam to tie up the game in Winter League
SIXTH INNING: What is your most embarrassing moment on the field, one you can look back on today and laugh about?
JM: I was playing center field in 10U and a bee crawled into my glove, so I threw my glove off in the middle of the inning and the ball got hit to me.
SEVENTH INNING: What habits and/or superstitions do you have as a softball player?
JM: My superstitions right now are that I have to eat a Chipwich before every game, I straighten my hair for every game, and I only wear one batting glove
EIGHTH INNING: Which of your teammates do you think is the best singer, and what song do you enjoy hearing her sing the most?
JM: Jenica (Matos), when she sings the “Riff Off from Pitch Perfect”, or Bailey (Vitanza) when she sings “The Fall of Jake Paul” by Logan Paul .
NINTH INNING: Let’s get away from the softball questions. If you could change one thing about Cheshire High School, what would it be?
JM: One thing I would change about CHS is that there would be air conditioning.
TENTH INNING: At this point of your education, which teacher has had the biggest impact on you and why?
JM: Miss Shopey, my fourth-grade teacher.
ELEVENTH INNING: If you could go out to dinner with three people, anybody in the world, past or present, who would you pick and what would you want to talk about?
JM: I would go out to dinner with (former Oklahoma softball player) Jocelyn Alo, because I want to talk to her about how she approaches her at bats and how she hits so many home runs. Paige Beuckers, because she has a crazy work ethic and mindset and I would like to be around someone like that. And, one more person would be Michael Jordan because he’s the most competitive athlete around.
TWELFTH INNING: If you had one do-over in life, what would you choose to do over?
JM: If I could redo something I would take me and my team back to June 8, 2024, to play Ludlowe in the State Championship again.
THIRTEENTH INNING: If you could delete one word from the English language, what would it be?
JM: Can’t.
FOURTEENTH INNING: If you could do something you can’t do right now as well as you play softball, what would you want to do better?
JM: I would play piano.
FIFTEENTH INNING: What one word best describes Jordan McCue?
JM: Competitive.
