MONROE—Masuk High School, which has won seven straight CIAC Class L state championships, has tabbed three-year assistant coach Emily Woznick to lead the program in the future.

Woznick replaces Leigh Barone, who stepped down suddenly earlier this fall.

Masuk announced the news in the following press release sent to media outlets today.

Woznick, a Social Studies teacher at Masuk, has been a member of the softball coaching staff for the past three seasons, contributing to the continued success of one of the most accomplished high school softball programs in the state.

During the interview process, Woznick impressed the hiring committee with a student-athlete-centered coaching philosophy that emphasizes positive and proactive communication, player growth, leadership development, and a team-first culture. She demonstrated deep knowledge of the game and a clear vision for supporting players at all stages of their softball journey, including those who train and compete year-round.

“We are excited for Emily to take the lead of our softball program,” said Masuk Athletic Director Brian Hourigan. “Emily is an outstanding teacher and coach who believes that athletics are an extension of the classroom. She impressed our committee with her knowledge of the game, her passion for helping student-athletes reach their full potential, and her strong communication skills. She embodies the core values of our athletic department—integrity, community, and excellence—and we are confident she will continue to lead our program with the highest standards.”

Woznick brings a strong combination of playing and coaching experience to the position. A standout collegiate athlete at Salve Regina University and Springfield College, she has served in coaching roles at both the high school and elite travel levels, including with the Rhode Island Thunder Gold and Newtown Thunder (now CT Thunder) programs. Her background has equipped her with an advanced understanding of the strategic, technical, and developmental aspects of softball, both in and out of season.

Woznick shared her appreciation for the opportunity to continue guiding the program:

“Masuk Softball is a program built on a legacy of excellence, pride, and community,” Woznick said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to lead a group of high-level athletes who work hard, support one another, and take pride in representing our school. My focus is always to be players’ coach first by supporting, motivating, and empowering each athlete both on and off the field to uphold the competitive spirit that has defined Masuk Softball.”

Masuk High School looks forward to the continued success of the program under Coach Woznick’s leadership.
