Welcome to May, softball fans. It’s the time of year where things really start to heat up.
As such, every day, the CT Softball Blog is going to be your go-to place not just for scores for the rest of this month through the end of the high school softball season, but we’re also going to be bringing you updates on some of the bigger matchups that we can’t get to, as well.
Like today.
Two pretty big showdowns happened around the state on this Saturday as, in a battle of undefeated teams, St. Paul Catholic hosted New Milford, and earlier in the day, Southington played host to Mercy.
In an offensive-minded affair, it was New Milford topping St. Paul’s by a 9-7 score while Southington walked off Mercy by scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Here’s a look at today’s slate.
New Milford 9, St. Paul Catholic 7
The game opened with a nine-run first inning as both teams came out swinging in this non-league battle of undefeated teams.
It was St. Paul’s that led 5-4 after that first inning, but the Green Wave would improve to 12-0 on the season with the victory.
Grace Staller (1-for-3, 1 run scored) drove in three runs for New Milford. One came on a ground out to tie the game at 5-5 in the third inning and the other game on a two-run single in the fifth as the Wave took a 9-5 lead.
Lydia Rocky added a double, a single and two RBIs while Carly Colonerio added two RBIs, as well, with a double.
Cienna McNamara was 3-for-4 and Maddie Caverly was 2-for-4 with an RBI, too.
Rocky went the distance in the circle, striking out eight and walking four.
For St. Paul Cathlic, which slipped to 11-1 with its first loss of the season, Sydney Yanavich was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs.
Bella McCullough (2 RBIs) and Breyona Demora (1 RBI) both had two hits for the Falcons. Demora was in the circle, striking out 11 and walking three.

Southington 9, Mercy 6
Trailing 6-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, the host Southington Knights scored six times to pull off a stunning walk-off win.
Addie Wanner stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. She quickly fell behind 0-2 by watching two strikes. After taking two balls, she fouled off a pitch to stay alive. She then won the game with a three-run double, plating Reece Archer, Savanna Eliasson and Abby Lockwood.
Southington got an RBI single from Gianna Mancini earlier in the inning and it was a two-run double by Amber Raney that tied the game.
Olivia Gombotz was 3-for-4 for Southington with an RBI. Aubrey Perugini had a single and double as did Wanner. In the circle, Angie Insogna and Mancini split the duties, combining to strike out five while walking four.
For Mercy, Julia Lane had a solo home run, Carly Weisenberg (2-for-3, 3 runs scored) tripled and Maggie Mathews (2-for-3, 3 RBIs) doubled.
