While most of Saturday’s high school softball games were pushed up to pushed back to the forecast of rain, at least six schools gambled they could get the game in and they won.
Three of them even got wins, as well.
Here is the rundown of Saturday’s light schedule:
Stonington 5, Woodstock Academy 3
A balanced offensive attack that included eight hits from six different players and single RBIs from four gave Stonington the win at home.
The Bears plated there runs in the bottom of the sixth to win it, turning a 3-2 defecit into a 5-3 lead.
A Scavello led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. A fielder’s choice by A Zagol eliminated Scavello for the first out, but this is where Stonington surged. Zagol reached third on back-to-back passed balls and she scored when Melanie Vevridge singled to left, tying the game at 3-3.
R. Palmer then gave Stonington the lead, tripling to right field to make it 4-3.
After S Mayo walked, H Lyon singled home Palmer with an insurance run to push the Bears advantaged to 5-3.
In the top of the seventh, Stonington pitcher Zagol, who came in as a reliever in the fourth, set Woodstock down with a 1-2-3 inning to end it. Zagol struck out five, didn’t walk anybody and gave up just one hit in four innings of work.
For Woodstock Academy, Ellary Sampson was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs. Caroline Ethier also had a hit and an RBI.
Daniel Hand 7, Coginchaug 3
A 6-run second inning gave Daniel Hand a lead it would not relinquish as the Tigers got the road win.
Claire Mackey, who had just one hit, drove in three runs while Lena Aguzzi, who had two singles, plated a pair to lead Hand. Phoebe Brennan also had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
For Coginchaug, which was held to three hits by Hand’s Riley Amenta and Campbell Leckey, Bella Tosto tripled and had an RBI while Ava Ekblade and Charlotte Lombardi both singled.
Lyme-Old Lyme 8, Branford 2
