CHESHIRE—They’ve been No. 1 in the state all season long, according to the CT Softball Blog Top 10 Players’ Poll. And they’ve been atop GametimeCT’s Media/Coaches poll for much of the season, as well.
This week, though, the Cheshire Rams softball team has taken its polling stature to a national level.
According to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s latest national high school softball poll, the Cheshire Rams are the 24th-ranked team in the country.
“Seeing this just makes me so happy for the girls, families and staff to be recognized for their hard work, sacrifice and buy-in to one another,” Cheshire coach Kristine Drust said. “These girls and families are just so deserving of that recognition.”
The Rams, winners of 27 straight dating back to last season, are 22-0 this season, heading into Wednesday’s Southern Connecticut Conference championship game against Jonathan Law. (5 p.m., at Biondi Field in West Haven).
The Rams have out-scored their competition this season by a 187-6 count with Jenica Matos and the Cheshire pitching staff firing 18 shutouts in their 22 games.
Cheshire, playing its third straight league championship game, is looking to win its first SCC title since 2024. The Rams lost to Foran a year ago, but bounced back to win the state Class LL championship.
Orange Beach High School in Alabama is the No. 1 ranked team, according the poll. Orange Beach is 46-1 this season.
According to the NFCA, “the poll is built from state rankings submitted by its High School Steering Committee and weighs performance, roster quality and strength of schedule.”
