CHESHIRE—Two members of the two-time Class LL state champion Cheshire Rams and a sophomore from Nonnewaug have been named All-Americans by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Pitcher Jenica Matos earned First Team honors while second baseman Jordan McCue received a second-team nod for their play this past season. Nonnewaug’s Gianna DeLorenzo was named a third-team All-American.
Matos, a senior, dominated from the circle all season long, posting a 26-0 record this season. She pitched 179 innings, striking out 405 hitters while giving up just two earned runs all season (0.08 ERA). Teams batted a miniscule .069 against her this season. She also won the MaxPreps’ Connecticut Player of the Year. She will take her talents to St. John’s University starting in the fall.
McCue, another senior, hit .512 with an on-base percentage of .590 from Cheshire’s lead-off spot. She had 44 hits, 15 of which doubles, along with 5 home runs and she posted 20 RBIs while scoring 44 runs. She also stole 34 bases this season while striking out just six times. She will play at UConn starting in the fall.
DeLorenzo, a sophomore, was named NFCA All-American third team this season.
She hit .588 this season with eight doubles and 19 home runs while plating 45 runs and scoring 46 herself.
