GREENVILLE, N.C.—It wasn’t the start the Bristol Little League Softball All-Stars had hoped.
The New England champs fell 15-1 in their Little League Softball World Series debut, as a strong Central team from Owensboro, Kentucky, took advantage of every bad break that went against Bristol on Monday night.
From having a run thrown out at home plate in the bottom of the first, to having starting pitcher Ava Lefurgey leaving the game in the bottom of the second inning due to a lower-leg injury, it simply wasn’t Bristol’s night against the Kentucky state champs, who pounded out 14 hits in the game which started shortly before 9 p.m. due to Sunday rainouts.
Bristol will face Tom’s River, N.J., at 1 p.m., today in an elimination game.
After Kentucky scored first on a two-out RBI-double, Lucy Bastiaanse led off the game for Bristol with a double. She was sacrificed to third base by Keeva Knowles.
On the next play, however, a ground ball back to the pitcher saw Bastiaanse caught too far of third base and she was tagged out at the plate after a short run down.
In the second inning, Kentucky scored five times but the bigger loss was Lefurgey, who started to favor her left leg and then started limping.
After delivering one pitch that sailed to the backstop, she almost went down and had to be removed from the game.
A nine-run fourth inning by Kentucky ended the game, even though Bristol did get one run in the home half of the inning. Lucy Kalat had a one-out single. She would later score on an error.
Makinnley Whitlock also added a single as did Dakota Green.
